The Story Behind the Purple Hair
“Is she mini you?” “She looks like the owner!” “That’s you, right?”
These are the questions we hear everywhere we go. And yes – the Aimee Doll is inspired by me, but she represents something far greater than any one person.
The Story of the Aimee Doll: From Congo to College: A Scholar's Awakening
As a Frances Perkins Scholar at Mount Holyoke College, I sat in a psychology class that would ignite everything. We studied the famous Clark Doll Test from the 1940s – a groundbreaking experiment where psychologists Kenneth and Mamie Clark presented children with identical dolls, differing only in color.
The results were devastating: the majority of children preferred white dolls, associating them with “good” and “pretty,” while rejecting dolls that looked different. This experiment provided crucial evidence for Brown v. Board of Education, proving that segregation instilled deep psychological damage in children across communities.
Sitting in that classroom, I remembered my own childhood in the Congo. Every doll I owned was white. Even in African markets, white dolls dominated because that’s what we were told was beautiful.
That moment changed everything.
What the Aimee Doll Represents
Changing the Narrative: Countering decades of psychological conditioning that told children only certain types of beauty were valuable
Cultural Pride: Celebrating diverse features, natural hair textures, and varied skin tones as beautiful and worthy of love
Educational Impact: Teaching children that dolls – and people – who look like them or different from them are valuable, important, and beautiful. It helps them understand our common humanity at a very young age and opens up a global perspective that extends beyond any single culture. This sparks curiosity, understanding, and opens their minds beyond worldly limitations. They will understand there is more to the world.
Healing Generational Trauma: Addressing the internalized biases that the Clark Doll Test revealed still exist today
Representation Matters: Ensuring every child sees themselves and others reflected in their toys and dreams
Psychological Revolution: Reversing the Clark Doll Test results in real-time

The Joy We Witness Every Day
There’s nothing quite like watching a child’s face light up when they see the Aimee Doll for the first time. We’ve witnessed this magic in stores, at events, and walking through communities everywhere.
Children from all backgrounds gravitate toward her. They see themselves. They see beauty. They see possibility.
Parents tell us stories of their kids carrying their Aimee Doll everywhere – to the grocery store, on family walks, to playdates. Each time, we’re witnessing the Clark Doll Test results reverse in real-time.
This is the psychological revolution we dreamed of.
From Classroom to Community
The Aimee Doll carries forward the educational mission that began in my Mount Holyoke psychology classroom. She’s a bridge between academic research and real-world change, between my journey as a Frances Perkins Scholar and your child’s developing sense of self-worth.
When you bring an Aimee Doll home, you’re not just buying a toy – you’re investing in a child’s psychological development, cultural pride, and understanding that beauty comes in all colors, textures, and forms.
A Movement That Travels
The Aimee Doll travels wherever families go, carrying her message of representation and self-love. She’s building confidence in playrooms across the country, accompanying children on adventures, and quietly revolutionizing how the next generation sees beauty and worth.
Every child who chooses her is choosing to see beauty in diverse features, natural hair, and cultural authenticity. Every family that welcomes her is joining a movement that started in a college classroom and now spans communities everywhere.
