Aimee's Journey
From Refugee Experience to Leadership Expert
My passion for Ubuntu Leadership Training stems from lived experience of authentic community building during times of crisis. Growing up in Goma, Democratic Republic of the Congo, I witnessed firsthand how Ubuntu Leadership Philosophy sustained communities through extraordinary challenges, including displacement during the Mount Nyiragongo volcanic eruption.
These formative experiences, combined with my Mount Holyoke College education in Psychology and Entrepreneurship, certified fitness expertise, and entrepreneurial journey building Positively Africana By Aimee Brand from the ground up, provide both authentic cultural foundation and academic rigor for corporate leadership training.
My Experience
My evolution from refugee experience to recognized entrepreneur has been strengthened through extensive experience leading workshops and movement sessions at five colleges throughout Massachusetts, community colleges, Amherst Middle School, non-profits, and businesses that sought my expertise in community building through wellness and workshops around wellness and community through storytelling. This diverse experience culminated in speaking engagements at distinguished institutions including panel discussions on entrepreneurship and wisdom at Greenfield Community College, UMass Amherst, and Mount Holyoke College, where I share insights on resilience, community building, and authentic leadership with students and faculty.
Ubuntu Leadership Through Community Service and Advocacy
My commitment to Ubuntu Leadership extends through six years serving as a board member at the International Language Institute of Massachusetts, where I served as keynote speaker multiple times and MC for annual Giving Voice Events supporting free English programs for immigrants and refugees.
Through sharing my Ubuntu journey with donors and community members, my presentations inspired significant donor support for refugee programs, demonstrating how authentic Ubuntu Leadership Philosophy creates meaningful connections that drive collective action and community empowerment.
During my time with ILI, I also founded an intercultural club where students shared different cultures while practicing their English and building connections, embodying the Ubuntu principle of “I am because we are” through cross-cultural community building that enriched both language learning and cultural understanding.
