Why the Aimee Doll?

Aimee Doll
At Positively Africana By Aimee, the Aimee Doll is more than a toy. It is a story, a connection, and a movement rooted in one belief: every child deserves to grow up seeing themselves and others with confidence, curiosity, and belonging.

Our Mission

Our mission is to empower children and families through representation, cultural pride, and community connection. We celebrate African heritage, support women artisans in Congo, and create spaces where diversity is embraced and joy is shared. No matter which Aimee Doll you choose, designed or handmade, 25% of all profits support women entrepreneurs and artists in the Congo. That matters deeply to the Positively Africana By Aimee brand.

The Everyday Conversation in Our Shop

Almost every day, someone picks up a doll, smiles, and says:
“Is that you?”
“Is she mini you?”
“She looks like the owner!”
“That’s you, right?”
And yes, the Aimee Doll is inspired by me. But she represents something much bigger than any one person. She represents what happens when children see a wider, healthier, and more honest picture of beauty and humanity.

What Brings Me the Most Joy

One of the greatest joys in our store is watching how children respond to the Aimee Dolls, no matter their race or culture.
White children. Black children. Hispanic children. Asian Children. Children from many backgrounds.
They light up. They hold the doll close. Some cry. Some beg their parents. Some will not let go. They push and insist, “I want that one.”
Every time I witness this, I feel hope because it shows progress. It shows the difference we can make when children are exposed to dolls that reflect different stories, features, and cultures in a normal, joyful way.

The Inspiration: From Congo to College

As a Frances Perkins Scholar at Mount Holyoke College, I sat in a psychology class that changed my life. We studied the Clark Doll Test from the 1940s, where psychologists Kenneth and Mamie Clark presented children with identical dolls, differing only in skin color.

The results were devastating. Many children preferred the white doll and associated it with “good” and “pretty,” while rejecting the doll with darker skin. The study became part of the evidence used in Brown v. Board of Education, proving that segregation and bias create real psychological harm in children.

Sitting there, I remembered my own childhood in the Congo.
Every doll I owned was white. Even in African markets, white dolls dominated because that is what we were taught was beautiful.
That moment became my turning point. I knew we could do better.

What Is Really Happening When Children Play

When children nurture the Aimee Doll, they are not only building an emotional connection through play.
They are also being exposed, naturally and repeatedly, to a doll that may look like them or look different from them. That matters.
Because play is where children practice empathy. It is where they learn what is normal. It is where they build their earliest ideas about beauty, worth, and belonging.
And something else happens, too. Their minds open.
Children begin to develop a global perspective beyond their birthplace. The dolls expand their curiosity. They start asking questions. They become more open to stories, cultures, and people that may be different from what they see every day.
That is powerful.
It is not just representation. It is imagination. It is openness. It is the beginning of a worldview that says there is more to the world, and I can belong in it.
